This was an interview that One Direction did back in August of 2011 and as you can see at 1:28, they are told that Max from The Wanted said some negative things about them and they seem genuinely surprised by it and maybe a little upset. Louis is the one that speaks addresses it after Scott Mills tells them.

I know people are arguing over who started this whole thing, but this is the first moment I can remember that they talked about something being said and to me it seems as if Max from The Wanted started it, but that is my opinion. By the way…this was BEFORE the Red and Black appearance and The Wanted were apparently already saying stuff in the press about the boys.

Just thought I would point it out since everyone is discussing it.

Interesting because

1. Like you said you can see the boys don’t quite know how to respond

2. You can see Louis try not to jump to conclusions

3. He’s extra careful with his response, he doesn’t automatically take the statements as truth, instead he realizes how things can be taken out of context and attempts to give them the benefit of the doubt.

4. He doesn’t just start mouthing off about them negatively and lashing back and still points out that both groups get on.

5. The real question is why if they got on would Max even start saying slick stuff like this?

6. It just seems like One Direction really tried to avoid starting anything with them.

So after seeing this post, I went digging to see if I could find the source article for the quote attributed to Max George. I found it.

Louis giving Max the benefit of the doubt was misplaced. He was already slagging off on the boys in late July of 2011. Which is sad, really, because from Louis’ reaction, its obvious that the 1D boys considered themselves on good terms, perhaps even friends, with The Wanted.

From an article in Metro on July 29th, approximately two weeks before One Direction’s Radio 1 debut of WMYB: [X]

The Wanted have made fun of fellow boyband JLS claiming they can’t handle their drink and also made a dig at One Direction slamming them as has-beens.

The singer also slated X Factor act One Direction saying they were no longer popular.

‘We are glad we are not an X Factor band. One Direction, where are they now?

‘It’s nice that we are a band who started with nothing. The X Factor is just for that moment and we did not want to be trapped.’

I am still digging to find more corroborating articles, but yeah, it appears that Max has been holding a grudge against 1D for a lot longer than most people are aware of.

There’s also an article where they say they’ll won’t consider One Direction competition, until they have a number one single on the charts. *Fast forward three years*.

One Direction and The Wanted are said to be at each others throats as they both go for glory in America.

Despite denying that there is any rivalry or bad feeling between the Wanted camp and One Direction, quotes attributed to Max George of The Wanted suggest that he is dismissing the boys as real competition.

The Sun reports that Max, who dates Coronoation Street actress Michelle Keegan, said that: “Our song is No4 in the charts. Maybe when they (One Direction) have a song right next to us in the charts over there, they’ll be competition.”

One week later - March 21, 2012 - I guess Max spoke too soon.
